Pampers "Designer" Diapers

This past weekend I learned about something that really blows my mind. Apparently Pampers has teamed up with designer Cynthia Rowley to create "Designer Diapers" that will be sold at Target. (We don't shop at Target, so I never would have known about these if I hadn't stumbled across the article online.)

Well, I just had to do some more research when I heard about these. After all, I understand. Disposable diapers are ugly. Especially if you don't particularly like the characters your diaper company of choice has decided to plaster all over your sposies.

Still...if you want to be blunt about it, these are something your child is going to use as a toilet and you are going to throw them away. Who really cares what they look like?

Well, obviously parents who cloth diaper! After all, if we didn't, companies wouldn't spend so much time coming out with new colors and patterns. Makers of products like BabyLegs wouldn't have much of a market if parents didn't like showing off their babies adorable pieces of fluff. I guess it would make sense that parents who choose to use sposies would like their kids to be fashionable as well.

At these prices though, I think that these parents might just want to switch to cloth now. According to an article by The Associated Press, a pack of about two dozen of the toddler-size diapers will have a suggested retail price of $15.99. That's about $6 more than the boring, character plastered Pampers. If your toddler goes through only 8 diapers a day, that means you're buying about 10 packs a month, which would equal out to approximately $60 extra dollars a month if you choose for your child to have a designer tush. Let's say your toddler uses 10 or 12 diapers a day...you'll easily be spending an extra $75-$90 bucks for these designer duds.

For that price, why not switch over to cloth? There are more pattern and color choices than you can count (the Pampers will be coming out with 11 different styles) and you don't have to throw them away after every use. Don't want all the "work" that comes along with cloth...bet they won't be as much work as you've heard. (Need reasons to go cloth and facts to debunk the myths? Check out Why Go Cloth? and my Q&A.) Besides, like I said, if you're going to spend that much extra a month anyways, you might as well get to keep the designs you're paying for.

I'm not knocking people who use disposables. To each their own, and  it's your money to blow. In my opinion, the better bang for your buck would certainly be cloth diapers, but I don't need a bunch of hate messages calling me a hippie or telling me to mind my own business. This is my blog, and a blog about cloth diapers, and this is my opinion. Take it or leave it.

What do you think? I'd love to hear your opinions on these new designer duds for baby's bums! (Polite and adult conversation only please. Thank you.)

Happy Diapering!
